The Grammys may be over but at Deacon Design we are celebrating 3 new award nominations. The RICS Social Impact Awards – who recognise the built environment’s contribution to society – have nominated our Southampton school project and a residential scheme in Kent. We are also up for nomination for a Later Living project within the Pinders Healthcare Design Awards 2020.
The nominees are:
Springwell SEN Primary School
Springwell, located in Southampton, is an Ofsted Outstanding primary school for children with complex learning difficulties. The phase 2 expansion of the school will make Springwell one of the largest SEN providers in Europe.
Working closely with Faithful & Gould, Southampton City Council, school representatives and Morgan Sindall, we have applied our knowledge of SEN landscapes to maximise opportunities for outdoor learning, engagement and sports activities on what is a rather constrained urban site.
Existing sports pitches enabled delivery of a MUGA (multi-Use Games Areas) to support PE and wider community infrastructure improvements. We have enjoyed the opportunity to work on such a rewarding scheme.
The Observatory, Hollow Lane, Canterbury
The Observatory, situated in Hollow Lane, Canterbury has been shortlisted in the Residential Category for the 2020 Awards. The Observatory is a high-end development, consisting of new limited edition 3 and 4 bed homes.
Mainly detached, these new homes are set with small clusters of shared surfaced streets creating a neighbourhood friendly street enhanced with robust, seasonal planting and a central green for doorstep play. It has been a pleasure working with Pentland Homes and Clague Architects.
As part of our growing portfolio with Porthaven, the new care home at Newbury adopts a proven approach to a nursing and dementia landscape creating a series of communal and private spaces that allow residents, families and staff to engage with the external environment.
The landscape design seeks to reinforce Porthaven’s reputation for providing high quality care with an emphasis on individuality. Our design includes a series of accessible communal terraces and lawns that are linked via sensory planted pathways. Private patio areas accessed directly from ground floor suites allow residents to personalise their space. Together the design and layout help to reduce the scale and massing which in turn creates an intimate feel and sense of tranquillity – key to residents wellbeing.
