Work Experience at Deacon Design – An Introduction to Landscape Architecture

Last month we had the pleasure of hosting work experience student Oscar from Henry Cort school, Fareham. Oscar is in Year 10 and has an interest in design, mathematics and history. Whilst at first this might seem rather separate from landscape architecture; we were able to demonstrate the importance of applying these skills in designing new landscapes that are influenced by topography and the historic landscape.

Following a trip to Stoneham Park (completed in 2022) and Welborne Garden Village (currently under construction) Oscar was tasked with redesigning the historic Wickham Square, where our studio is based.

At the end of week, we asked Oscar for his thoughts and this is what he shared:

“At the start of my week, I didn’t know much about landscape architecture, and I only had a basic understanding of what landscape architects do. Throughout my week at Deacon Design, I have re-designed Wickham Square to how I would like it to be, and I have also designed my own play area for children.

I was shown different ways to design this, and I created different ideas and sketches to help me visualise my ideas. Furthermore, I was shown how to use software packages including Sketchup, Twinmotion, AutoCAD and Adobe Photoshop to develop my ideas – I put my play area into Photoshop and onto a satellite image to see what it would really look like in person.

As well as this, I have seen many of their finished and work in progress projects such as Welborne Garden Village which gave me an understanding of the scale of what landscape architects can design and create. I have very much enjoyed my time here and see landscape architecture as a career option in the future”

We thoroughly enjoyed having Oscar in the studio and are always keen to reach out to young people who are thinking about a career in the built environment and associated green industries.

Feel free to drop us a line if you want to discuss how landscape architecture could be a career for you!
